The Ghosts Between Us

I saw the fire behind his eyes, A thousand stars beneath the skies. He held my trembling, held my fears, And kissed the silence of my tears.

He said, "My darling, I'm right here, You don't have to live inside your fear." But how can I believe in morning When every dawn still feels like warning?

He gave me more than I could name, A gentle heart, a burning flame. He made a promise, not a game, And never asked me to be the same.

But there were shadows in my room, Old conversations, familiar gloom. I saw the future, then the past, And wondered how long love could last.

Oh, I wanted to surrender, I wanted to believe, But every time he reached for me, There was something underneath.

A voice that said, "Remember, The beautiful things disappear." And the harder he held on to me, The more I disappeared in fear.

OH, HE WAS REAL! GOD, HE WAS REAL! He gave me everything a heart could ever feel!

He fought the ghosts, he faced the rain, He took my sorrow, swallowed pain. But how do you love a man who stands With open heart and empty hands?

I WAS THE STORM! HE WAS THE SHORE! And I kept asking him for more!

He tried to save the girl inside, But even love could not undo The things I kept alive!

(VOICE I) Who was the liar? (VOICE II) Not him! Not him!

(VOICE I) Who held the fire? (VOICE II) Within! Within!

(VOICE I) Was he pretending? (VOICE II) No! No! No!

(VOICE I) Then why was I breaking The heart that wouldn't let go?

I know he waited through the night, I know he tried to make things right. I know he dreamed of growing old, Of stories yet to be untold.

And when I fell, he felt it too, Though I was blind to what he went through. He carried burdens of his own, While I kept fighting wars alone.

He wasn't asking me to bleed, He only wanted to be what I need. But every promise felt so wide, When I had nowhere safe inside.

Perhaps one day I'll understand The heart that reached to take my hand. Perhaps one day the truth will show The love I couldn't let myself know.

And if he thinks he wasn't enough, Tell him this: it wasn't his love. He was a man who tried to stay, While I was running every day.

OH, HE WAS REAL! AND SO WAS I! Two broken heavens underneath one sky!
